Separate trade-in value from the payoff on the old loan

A trade-in offer and an outstanding loan balance are different numbers. Combining them too early can hide negative equity inside a replacement deal. A useful comparison obtains a current payoff, understands the proposed trade value and shows where any difference goes, without assuming a dealer's promise to pay off a loan makes the debt disappear.

Obtain the current payoff information

Ask the current lender for the payoff amount and its validity period through an official route. A statement balance may differ from the amount required to settle the loan at a particular date. Keep account details private and share only what the transaction requires. Record any timing or process instructions from the lender. Do not estimate payoff from the number of payments you remember making. The replacement decision should begin with a current figure, not an assumption that a nearly finished term means little remains. If the account is disputed or unclear, resolve that with the lender or appropriate advice.

Get the trade value as a distinct offer

Ask how much the dealer is offering for the actual vehicle and under what conditions. Compare other credible options if appropriate, while accounting for time, local tax treatment and transaction costs through reliable current information. A high trade allowance can be offset by a different purchase price elsewhere in the deal. Keep the numbers separate enough to see that. Vehicle condition, market and inspection can affect an offer, so do not treat an online estimate as a guaranteed sale value. The useful figure is a written proposal for your car, with its assumptions visible.

Pay attention to the timing between the trade and the old lender's settlement. Ask which party sends the payoff, when it should happen and how you can verify completion through an official account route. Do not assume the old payment obligation has ended merely because the vehicle has been handed over. Follow lender instructions and seek appropriate help for a delay or discrepancy, keeping transaction records available.

Show the difference explicitly

If payoff exceeds trade value, the gap is negative equity. CFPB explains that rolling it into a new loan makes the replacement borrowing more expensive. An illustrative payoff of 14,000 and trade value of 11,000 leaves a 3,000 difference before considering the new transaction. These are invented round numbers, not market values. Ask whether the gap is paid separately or added to financing, and where that appears in the contract. A promise to pay off the old lender does not by itself mean the dealer has absorbed the cost. Follow the money through the written breakdown.

Verify completion and consider alternatives

Before signing, understand the replacement amount financed and the old-loan settlement process. After a transaction, follow up through the lender to confirm the old obligation was handled as agreed. Keep records and use appropriate consumer or legal help for a problem. If the combined deal does not fit your finances, consider other options rather than assuming immediate replacement is the only path. This site does not recommend a personal financial strategy. The useful outcome is clarity about equity and obligations, without a misleading story that a new payment erases an old balance or that future resale value is guaranteed.

An illustrative equity gap

A buyer obtains a current 14,000 payoff and an 11,000 trade offer. She asks where the illustrative 3,000 gap appears in the replacement proposal and sees it included in the new amount financed. She compares the full obligation rather than treating a promise to pay the old lender as a gift of 3,000.

Questions that come up

Does paying off the old loan mean negative equity was forgiven?

Not necessarily. The amount may be included in new financing or paid another way. Read the complete breakdown.

Is an online trade estimate a guaranteed offer?

No. Condition, market and transaction terms can affect the actual written offer.
